THE ICE STORM

Ang Lee takes on the American suburban family complications in the 1970s. Two families are interconnected by parental infidelity and teenage show-me-yours-I-show-you-mine. Nothing special. What makes it remarkable is the fact that no one in those families cares about their enstrangements, weird behaviour and constant miscommunications. There seems to be a moralic vacuum - no values, no cirticism possible. Everyone cares for himself only, solely, without any personal or emotional perspectives.
When at the end the ice storm really breaks out, you just have to ask, if this is a weather phenomenon or simply manifested coldness of the hearts by the people we see walking, talking, drinking, but never feeling.
Only at the very end, the storm being over and the light of the new day shining with innocence on the characters, the adulterous father breaks down and begins to cry. And we realize with horror: there so many things he should be crying about, there is no way to feel what he feels, to be compassionate.
