IRIS
who is this woman you brought home to me? In some ways, the Alzheimer desease seems worse than any sickness of the body, like cancer or AIDS even. Because those you can fight, if not fully heal. But Alzheimer? There is no way out, you will go into this darkness with your eyes wide open. And what do you know or feel when you are there? No one knows for sure, but it's frightening as hell.
Iris is a brilliant thinker and writer, being admired and loved by many. She says for herself that there is no thinking without speaking. And when she begins to lose her words, this is pure tragic and incredibly sad. But we never know if she realises what happens to her, thanks to a sensitive and brave performance by Judy Dench.
Emotionally open like a book is her husband for us: Being his shadow all his life, he now has to care for her, watch her going into the nothingsness and yet who keeps loving her until her quiet death. Not even the one, severe outburst of hatred against her can diminish his accomplishment.
This is a very moving, unspectacular film with an excellent cast, and it emphazises on the frightening truth all the time: it can strike any of us. And then what?
